JAOS Lexus LX600 Finishes First in Baja 1000

KYB partnered JAOS Lexus crossed the finish line first in the Stock Full Size Class for the 2024 Event

Ensenada, Baja California, MX, November 22, 2024 – KYB partner JAOS has just completed its third attempt at the Baja 1000. The team finished first in class in the extreme endurance test with their Lexus LX600 in 28 hours and 47 minutes. They have achieved their goal with the three-year plan of winning in the third year. After two years of experiencing Baja’s huge demands on the vehicle and driver, all those lessons learned were put into a winning strategy in the Stock Full Size class. The team was hungry for the result after last year’s heartbreak of finishing just after time was officially called.

Tomonori Noto completed the drive as an Ironman competitor, meaning no other driver took the helm of the vehicle during the race. He was able to have multiple codrivers take turns in the passenger seat to help keep him focused and on course. This year’s route was an 869 mile circuit of the Baja peninsula, starting and ending in Ensenada. All the drivers and teams had to endure cold temperatures and rain through the long night. Battling the conditions, the course, and other competitors, along with the clock are what makes Baja so challenging.

The JAOS team continued their joint effort with Canguro Racing who were unable to take the start due to technical issues with their Land Cruiser, “Monica.” Unfortunately, the Canguro team suffered additional tragedy before the race began when one of their crew members was struck by a fellow competitor’s vehicle, causing severe injuries. The crew member received medical attention in Ensenada and has been transported back to the United States for further treatment. If you would like to help, there is a GoFundMe to help with his long road to recovery.

KYB and JAOS have a history of collaboration and launched a new product line in 2022 for the North American offroad aftermarket. The KYB “4Trainer” 4Runner training vehicle, equipped with the KYB JAOS lift kit, helped support the effort. The KYB JAOS Suspension Lift Kits provide up to a 2” lift and some units come with a 14-position damping dial. The increased ride height of the KYB JAOS kits are perfect matches when installing larger tires and wheels. Find out more about the KYB JAOS kits here.

The entry also featured KYB SustainaLubTM which is a sustainable shock absorber fluid that is both carbon neutral and recyclable. The new fluid contributes to carbon neutrality by switching from petroleum derived base oil to naturally derived base oil.  Full release to the market is planned for 2026. You can see more about the SustainaLub fluid here.

KYB Launches New Product Line: Shock Assemblies

Complete shock assemblies make installation faster, easier

In the early 2010’s, OE manufacturers began developing new technologies for shock absorber mounting to improve not only performance, but ease of maintenance and replacement. KYB’s new shock assemblies will help service professionals reduce installation times and simplify ordering while providing the best OE replacement parts on the market.

KYB Shock Assemblies will soon be available for a wide range of vehicles that use rear shock mount technology. Similar to the KYB Strut-Plus and Truck-Plus complete strut assemblies, the new KYB Shock Assembly units come complete with shock, mount and boot already installed. “More and more vehicles have begun using mounts to secure their shocks, as opposed to simply bolting the shock directly to the frame,” says Guna Sathyamurthy, Product Manager for KYB North America. “Using a mount makes for a stronger, more durable method of installation, resulting in less stress on the shock and a longer shock life.”

Combining the necessary parts into one package with one part number eliminates the need to purchase a bare shock, mount kit and boot kit separately. According to Andy Castleman, KYB Director of Product and Marketing, “We’ve designed this new product line to be a plug and play replacement for vehicles using this installation method. By including an OE replacement shock with the mount and protective boot already installed, shops will be able to install these units quickly and easily, reducing rack time and decreasing downtime for vehicle owners.”

KYB’s initial release of complete shock assemblies includes several high VIO late model vehicles, and additional part numbers will continue to be released as the market grows. Current applications can be found at www.kyb.com/catalog or on the new KYB Mobile Parts Catalog app, available on The App Store and Google Play.

KYB Celebrates 50 Years in North America

Celebrating our past, looking to our future

Greenwood, IN, July 8, 2024 – The ‘70’s were turbulent times in North America. The public was struggling with soaring inflation, political upheaval, the energy crisis and high unemployment. Plants closed, jobs went elsewhere, and while some North Americans pushed for greater individual freedoms, others warned about declining moral standards. And though the continent was in turmoil, there were those that could foresee the potential and opportunities for a strong recovery.

In the summer of 1974, KYB introduced a limited line of Macpherson Strut replacement cartridges, Gas-a-Just and Premium Heavy Duty shock absorbers to North America. Relatively unknown in the automotive markets outside of Japan, the high quality, dependable and highly engineered KYB shock absorbers quickly took hold with a cost and quality conscience public. Through strong and exciting sale-making advertising, motivated sales representatives and regional distribution centers in California, Texas, the Midwest and the New England area, KYB soon became a growing force in the North American automotive aftermarket.

Surviving the turbulent ’70s, KYB took full advantage of the economically booming ’80s, building a new 500,000 square foot North American manufacturing plant in Franklin, Indiana just outside of Indianapolis. The Franklin plant has been building OE and aftermarket shocks and struts since 1986. It continues to grow with the addition of a research and development lab, “clean” room for assembling shock valving, and most recently, being honored as the 2019 Industrial Plant of the Year for Waste Water Quality for reducing waste water discharge 40% to the City of Franklin.

The next few decades saw continued expansive growth, with a new office being opened in Addison, Illinois in 1999 and the launch of highly popular MonoMax truck shock just after the Millenium. In 2008, KYB debuted the Strut-Plus complete assembly, helping to set the standard in aftermarket ride control.

2011 saw the opening of a 275,000 square foot distribution center in Greenwood, Indiana, just up the road from the Franklin manufacturing plant. The close proximity of these two locations allowed for quicker development and manufacturing of new applications and product lines as well as faster distribution to customers throughout North America. The Addison, Illinois office was moved to the Greenwood facility in 2014, completing the consolidation of administration, distribution and manufacturing.

KYB Continues to be a top manufacturer and distributor of the highest quality shocks, struts and ride control products available in today’s North American market. Its “Restore or More” philosophy defines its product lines, including the high demand Excel G, designed to restore a vehicle’s originally designed handling and control characteristics, the long-established Gas-a-Just, engineered to increase the performance of cars and trucks, and the aforementioned MonoMax, designed for hard working trucks that haul and tow. KYB’s partnerships with OE manufacturers and focus on providing the completely correct part for each application has made it one of the top ride control companies in North America.

And KYB continues to grow, with monthly announcements of additional applications and fitments, new product releases such as KYB JAOS lift kit applications and a highly anticipated new product line scheduled for release in 2025.

KYB. Celebrating our past. Looking to our future.

Revolutionary Environmentally Friendly Hydraulic Fluid

KYB unveils a truly environmentally friendly hydraulic fluid called SustainaLubTM

Shock absorbers play an important role in stabilizing the movement of a car by using hydraulic pressure and friction. Hydraulic oil supports this operation. Without this oil, the shock absorber cannot perform efficiently. Conventional hydraulic fluids are packed with years of research, know-how and advanced technology, but many of their main components are base oils derived from petroleum. The newly developed SustainaLubTM aims to be a truly environmentally friendly shock absorber hydraulic fluid that eliminates the environmental risks associated with petroleum. SustainaLubTM is a sustainable product that is both carbon neutral and recyclable. Full release to the market is planned for 2026.

As a specialized global manufacturer of hydraulic equipment, KYB has long been involved in maintaining and improving the safety and comfort of automobiles. Using that experience, we are striving to achieve environmental balance without compromising performance or reliability. Not only does SustainaLubTM improve maneuverability and stability by applying it to the various damping force valves that we already offer, but it also improves the feel of the product by applying friction control technology, for example KYB Prosmooth® shock absorbers. With Prosmooth®, internal shock absorber friction is controlled by using newly developed materials for sliding parts, and variable hydraulic fluid additive adjustment technology. This product delivers both a luxurious ride and superb cornering.

This new fluid contributes to carbon neutrality by switching from petroleum derived base oil to naturally derived base oil.  It absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere during cultivation of the plants used for the base oil raw materials, also reducing CO2 emissions during transportation. It is biodegradable up to 60% or more according to the Eco Mark certification standard (OECD301). The base oil and additive formulation is recyclable, reducing environmental issues in the long term.

All new KYB products undergo reliability evaluation at the KYB Development Centre in Japan. Thorough performance and quality evaluation involves both bench tests and actual vehicle testing on our state-of-the-art test track. This in-house design of a hydraulic oil recipe is unique to a manufacturer specializing in shock absorbers.

The KYB team participating in the All Japan Rally Championship JN-2 class introduced SustainaLubTM to their vehicles from round 6 onwards. They analyzed and verified the performance and durability in the harsh race environment (see https://kybsport.com/teams/kayaba-rally-team for more information on this vehicle). In addition, SustainaLubTM was trialed in the vehicle used in the LEXUS ROV (Recreational off-Highway Vehicle) Concept customer experience program. It was used for LEXUS’ first ROV equipped with a hydrogen engine. The data accumulated also contributes to technology development for future practical applications, and work toward the realization of a carbon-neutral society.

The ROV Concept features a Lexus first hydrogen powered engine, designed to offer a distinctive driving experience not possible with regular passenger cars. This was achieved through a compact body size and exceptional off-road capabilities. By using a hydrogen engine, the ROV aims to balance environmental consciousness and the thrill of feeling the heartbeat of an engine. ROV utilizes low environmental impact technologies in its vehicle components thanks to the co-operation of partner companies like KYB, who share the same vision.

Replacing petroleum-based oil in KYB shock absorbers with this new hydraulic fluid will save up to 15.6 million liters of oil per year.

KYB plans to ultimately apply this technology to all hydraulic products involved in realizing a sustainable mobility society. As a specialized manufacturer of hydraulic equipment, KYB has long been working to improve the ride comfort and handling stability of automobiles. Based on this experience, KYB will continue to pursue advances in performance and reliability while keeping environmental impact at the forefront of development.

Electronically controlled OE shock absorbers for Volkswagen Group

Greenwood, IN, November 8, 2023 – Electronically controlled shock absorbers from KYB Corporation have been adopted by Volkswagen Group to equip new Tiguan, Passat Variant, SKODA Superb and Kodiaq models with the new DCC Pro (Dynamics Chassis Control Pro). The introduction into the market is scheduled during the first quarter of 2024.

DCC Pro systems use double valve shock absorbers to independently control the extension and compression oscillations caused by the car body and the wheel movements while driving.

These valves react to road conditions and driving situations in a few milliseconds. The ECU activates the respective extension and compression solenoids to adjust independently the internal pressure of the shock absorber to suit road conditions and the driver’s preference (from comfortable to very sporty). The damping characteristics are automatically adjusted in a continuous way, which in conjunction with the full independence between extension and compression movements, brings the vehicle comfort and control to the highest level. This provides safe, dynamic manoeuvrability and an unprecedented ‘flying carpet’ ride experience.

KYB and the VW Group have been working together for several years, including the sporty Audi RS suspension, and since then have co-operated extensively for the VW brand. This new development is part of KYB’s policy to further strengthen its partnership with the German car manufacturer. The hard development and validation process engineered between KYB and Volkswagen teams has made it possible to offer this technology, which up to now was only imagined for the premium segments.

KYB will continue growing in advanced technologies that provide high added value to our customers in these challenging times for the Automotive sector.

KYB produces electronically controlled shock absorbers both in Asia and Europe, in its manufacturing facilities specifically built to be at the forefront of high technology shock absorber manufacturing.
