Technical guidelines for the disposal of Shocks & Struts
1. Storage of used shocks and struts
(Referred to as “Units”)
- Store the used units in containers that are in good condition. Do not use rusted, damaged, or leaking containers.
- Label the storage container(s): “used oil.”
- If there is an oil spill from the unit(s) or storage container, follow the instructions given below in section 5C.
- Either drill the units to recycle the oil (see sections 3 and 4) or dispose of the complete units in a proper manner.
2. For safety reasons, always wear safety glasses and protective gloves during the drilling and disposal operation
Always use proper safety precautions (fig. 1)
Place the unit in a horizontal position in a vise (fig. 2).
Make sure the unit is secure in the vise and cannot move while being drilled.
Before drilling, extend the piston rod fully.
Check the unit to determine if it is a monotube, high pressure type (painted white and stamped with a “KG” part number) or a twin-tube unit (all other KYB products). Proceed to section 3 or 4.
3. Drilling and oil draining procedure for low pressure gas (50 and 110 psi) and non-gas twin-tube products
- Drill a 1/8″ hole in the outer tube (at H-1), 1″ from the lower end of the body (fig. 3). Gas pressure may force oil from the hole, so be prepared to stop any oil flow by placing a rag around the area.
- After the gas release, drill a 1/4″ hole at (H-1), 1/2″ deep (fig. 4).
- Compress the unit a minimum of 1″.
- Drill a second 1/4″ hole, 1/2″ deep, 1″ from the unit top end (H-2) (fig. 5). Remove the unit from the vise and hold it over a drain pan to collect the oil.
- Compress and extend the unit to help drain all the oil (fig. 6).
- The drained oil needs to be disposed of in a proper container, in accordance with E.P.A. waste disposal laws (fig. 7).
- Check with your local authorities for information on disposing of the oil and the drained units.
4. Drilling and oil draining procedure for monotube high pressure gas (280 psi) products:
- Drill a 1/8″ hole in the outer tube (at H-1), 1″ from the lower end of the body (fig. 8). If the unit has a protector (bulged tube), be sure to drill through it and the outer tube to release gas. Gas pressure may force oil from the hole, so be prepared to stop any oil flow by placing a rag around the area.
- Drill two additional 1/8″ holes at (H-2, 1″ from the top end) and at (H-3), 1 1/2″ from bottom end) (fig. 9). These holes will help drain the oil. (Go to Steps E thru G of Section 3 above.)
5. Oil storage and recycling instructions
- Underground tanks with a capacity greater than 110 gallons that are used to store waste oil are subject to U.S. EPA regulations for underground storage tanks. These regulations detail leak detection, corrosion protection, and spill / overfill requirements.
- Do not mix the oils drained from the scrapped units with used motor oils or any other wastes.
- If there is a spill or a release of oil, stop the release and contain the oil. Clean up the spilled oil and manage the spill waste properly.
- The used oil must be transported by a licensed waste oil hauler to a reputable oil recycler. Both the hauler and recycler must have a U.S. EPA Identification number.
